Jumping the Broom: A Love Story Rooted in Resilience

Black History Month invites us to reflect not only on milestones and achievements, but also on the traditions that sustained the African American community during its most challenging chapters. One such tradition is jumping the broom—a powerful symbol of love, unity, and resistance.

Within the African American community, jumping the broom dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries, when enslaved people were prohibited from legally marrying in the eyes of the state. Despite this denial of rights, love persisted. Couples found meaningful ways to commit to one another, creating ceremonies that reflected their values and humanity.

There are two commonly recognized accounts of the tradition’s origins. One suggests that enslaved people chose the act themselves, using a household broom—often readily available—to symbolize the start of a shared life. In this context, the broom represented sweeping away the past and stepping intentionally into a future together. Another account notes that enslavers sometimes imposed the act as a substitute for legal marriage, allowing unions to be acknowledged informally while maintaining control over enslaved lives.

After emancipation, many Black couples moved away from the practice as legal marriage became accessible. Yet others reclaimed it—continuing to jump the broom when an officiant was unavailable or choosing to honor the tradition as a cultural expression of ancestry and resilience, often formalizing their marriage later.

What began under oppression evolved into a reclaimed ritual—one that speaks to the enduring strength of Black love.

Today, jumping the broom remains a cherished part of weddings and vow renewals, connecting modern celebrations to generations past. It serves as a reminder that even when institutions failed, community, culture, and commitment endured.

This Black History Month, we honor traditions like jumping the broom—not just as history, but as living legacies. At our event center, we are proud to host celebrations that recognize where we’ve been while celebrating where we’re going.

✨ Because every love story deserves a space that understands its roots.
